J Scott Nicol — America’s Premier Painter of Books
“My passion for art began in High School. In 1979, I graduated from Rutgers University with a Fine Art degree in Photography and Painting. For the next 28 years, I was a successful commercial artist in print, video, graphics and textile design.
At age 50, I rediscovered my passion for fine art painting. I was selected by The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC to create a series of paintings to commemorate their “First Performances.”
From the success at The Kennedy Center, I focused on Broadway, another love of mine, and created a series of paintings using books, objects and sheet music, to commemorate the top Broadway musicals of all time. I worked closely with the Broadway community incorporating props and playbills from the actual shows in each oil painting.
The books used in the Broadway paintings inspired my next series incorporating books on a shelf. Classic first edition books as well as invented Pop culture book spines are realistically painted, incorporating trompe l’oeil rips and tears.”
Each of his paintings in the series is thematic. Much like a bookstore or library organizes its books into categories; Scott creates his book paintings into themes based on Popular Culture organized by years such as “1969,” Art History as seen in “Pop Art” and “Art Deco,” Biography themes like “Tormented Genius” and Travel themes organized by city shown in “New York, New York.”
